Dear Parents,
Serving God by serving others can bring lasting joy and self-satisfaction. All of us involved in Catholic education have always recognized that our success, even our existence, has often been due to the valuable contributions of the many volunteers who have worked with us. We also knew that our volunteers found their efforts to be a source of personal satisfaction above and beyond the feeling engendered by our heartfelt gratitude.
Perhaps it is time not to pass the torch, but rather share the torch with our children. As summer vacation approaches, and students will have more free time, we can help them find opportunities to volunteer their help wherever there is a need.
There may be ways to help older people in your neighborhood or family by running errands or doing yard work. Regular visits to someone who lives alone might be appreciated. Entertaining small children by playing games or by reading to them can give a busy mother a welcome break. There are people in nursing homes to visit. Your library or your church may need help. Adopting a local street or neighborhood park to help keep it clean is a valuable type of community service.
As you talk with your children about ways to help others, you will be helping them develop a Christian spirit. Serving God by serving others can bring lasting joy and self-satisfaction. Let this be the spring/summer our children find that joy!
